Old, worn spark plugs are prone to misfire reducing fuel efficiency as much as 30%.
Keep your tires properly inflated and balanced. This can improve fuel economy by up to one mile per gallon!
Tighten your gas cap. According to allfastcars.com, 147 million gallons of gasoline evaporate each year because fuel caps are damaged, loose or missing. So when you are finished fueling, be sure to tighten the cap.
Avoid aggressive driving. Speeding, rapid acceleration, and hard braking can lower your gas mileage.

Culture Drives the Design

Danbury, CT — Honeywell Consumer Products Group selected TFI Envision, Inc. to design their domestic and international product catalogs for 2009. The bilingual books creatively mirrored the booth graphics designed for the AAPEX trade show in Las Vegas in November with the return of the “DIYer” (do-it-yourselfer) as hero. Emotionally impactful and targeted imagery of the “end user” graced the cover and internal pages of this year’s books, showing the personal understanding that connects consumers with the products they choose. (In these economic times, maintaining your vehicle is of utmost importance. If you can do it yourself - even better!) Each 24-page catalog is divided into sections with bold brand building color, Spanish and English product descriptions, and scannable UPC pages to expedite the ordering process.

Let your voice be heard

Anywhere, USA — Just a reminder, November 4th - Election Day - is right around the corner.
On January 7, 1789 the United States held the first Presidential Election. That vote created electoral voters from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. North Carolina and Rhode Island had not yet ratified the Constitution and New York legislature was unable to pass an election act in time.
On February 4, 1789 the Electors voted George Washington as the first President of the United States with 69 of the 138 votes cast.

Nature’s own energy conservation

Planet Earth — Every year, we enjoy an amazing transformation during the autumn season as the trees put on their showy display. Yet, every year, it seems that we can’t remember what makes this happen. So we looked it up and here you go:
“Trees that have leaves that change color in the fall and drop to the ground are called deciduous trees. The length of the day determines when trees begin the process of dropping their leaves. Trees are able to “rest” during the winter when they do not have leaves. This actually lets trees conserve energy.
No matter where you live, as the seasons change from summer, to fall, to winter, the days shorten, bringing less of the sunlight necessary for the trees to produce chlorophyll. Chlorophyll gives leaves their basic green color and has the unique capability to capture sunlight for photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction that enables plants to use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce food for the tree in the form of sugar. In winter, there is not adequate sunlight for the tree to produce enough sugar to keep it healthy and growing; therefore, the process of photosynthesis in deciduous trees stops, the trees becomes dormant and wait for spring to return.
As a tree begins to prepare for winter, chlorophyll is no longer produced and starts to break down. As the chlorophyll begins to fade away, the other colors in the leaf can finally show their true intensity. The fall colors were always there; they were just hidden by the abundant amount of green color produced by the chlorophyll. Two pigments called carotene and anthocyanins create the other colors in the leaves. Carotene will persist in leaves even when chlorophyll has disappeared, causing the leaves to change from green to a yellow, orange, or brown color. In some trees, when sugars produced by the leaves can no longer flow from the leaf to the tree, anthocyanins form in the leaf. This reaction causes the yellowing leaves to turn red, blue, and purple.
Pigmentation in the leaves and the length of the days are just two factors that affect the color of leaves in the autumn. A third factor is weather. Weather conditions that occur before and during the time the chlorophyll is fading from the leaf can cause the fall foliage to vary from spectacular to drab.
Temperature and the amount of water in the soil are the main influences on the richness of color. A lot of sunny, warm days, with cool but not freezing nights, seem to produce the best colors in the fall. However, a really warm period in the fall will keep the leaves from being brilliantly colored, and if the soil does not have enough moisture due to a summer drought, leaves may not change colors for as long as a few weeks.”

Everything but the Kitchen Sink...

New York, NY — For the second consecutive year, Reed Elsevier chose TFI Envision, Inc. to design all of its employee benefits enrollment materials. This years mission was to streamline the communication materials into one easy-to-use piece. The result was a 20 page enrollment guide with a perforated interactive worksheet and a 8-panel Insider’s Guide that folded off of the back cover. Staying in the vein of last years materials, an upbeat and colorful tone was used for both the color palette and photography throughout. Employee reaction has been overwhelmingly positive for both the design and navigating through their enrollment options for 2009.

A new service dog program has an identity now!

Yorktown Heights, NY — Guiding Eyes for the Blind selected TFI Envision, Inc. to develop the identity for their new service dog program called “Heeling Autism”.
The program places a specially trained service dog with a family that has a child with autism. The dogs are trained to provide safety for the children by preventing them from bolting, either into the street or away from parents in a crowded area. Over time, the dog becomes the child’s companion and helps the child to be socially accepted by their peers. With a Heeling Autism service dog, families can venture into public with reduced parental stress, improving their overall quality of life.
Working closely with the Heeling Autism team, we developed a logo that conveys the safety and companionship provided with these very special canines. The logo also had to compliment the existing Guiding Eyes for the Blind logo.
We are also developing their stationery system, signage, educational and support materials for this important program.
Guiding Eyes for the Blind is the only North American organization that breeds the dogs that are trained for work with children with autism. For further information on this incredible program, call Caroline Sandler, Program Director at 914 243 2228 or send an email to heelingautism@guidingeyes.org

Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum disorder" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees.
Autism is treatable. Children do not "outgrow" autism, but studies show that early diagnosis and intervention lead to significantly improved outcomes.

New Their very first!

Yorktown Heights, NY — Guiding Eyes for the Blind selected TFI Envision, Inc. to develop their first ever annual report. Centered around first person narratives contributed by actual puppy raisers and recipients of GEB dogs, this critical piece of communication provides information about what GEB does; what it has accomplished; the innovative programs; who manages and governs GEB; and what GEB does with its donors’ money.
TFI Envision, Inc. struck the strategic balance of providing a substantial, well branded, full color informational annual that doesn’t make you wonder why they spent the money. It feels more like a coffee table book that you want to pick up and read, and then read again. The stories are compelling and bring the essence of GEB right into your heart. Printed on uncoated stock using soy based inks, it is a formidable tool for fundraising.

Who would have thought a logo could smell so delicious?

Norwalk, CT — How many things can you do with a logo? Sculpt it, draw it, repeat it, pull it apart, put it back together, light it up, race it, paint it, floralize it, tube it, sew it, wear it, bark it, layer it, and finally eat it!
The team at TFI Envision, Inc. decided to see what kind of things we could do with our new logo. Shown are some of the solutions we came up with.
It was unanimously decided that the “most delicious” concept was the “Logo Berry Pie” by Phillip Doherty, one of our senior designers, followed by “Logo Cookies” by Amy Pollard, our office manager.
Top left and down:
- 3-D Black Box with Illuminated Logo by Richard Wall
- Disassembled Logo by Elizabeth Ball
- Copper, Wood and Metals Logo by Chris Plaisted
- Layered Transparencies CMYK Logo by Pamela Moss
- Stone and Bark Logo by Brien O’Reilly
- Animated Multi-Media Logo by Elizabeth Ball
Top right and down:
- Logo Berry Pie by Phillip Doherty
- Raceway Logo by Amy Pollard
- Hat, Visor and T-shirt Logo by Linda Conte
- “Comin’ Up Daisies” by Mary Ellen Butkus
- Jewelry Logos by Cindy Emmert

“So much more than an art store!”

New York, NY — Lee’s Art Shop, an NYC institution for art supplies, has grown over its 40+ year history into four full stories on 57th Street, selling everything from art supplies, to furniture, gift items, framing, and more! The problem was that people didn’t know that they were anything other than an art shop.
Lee’s Art Shop selected TFI Envision, Inc. to develop a new branding strategy to bring them up to date. A review of their branding and equities resulted in the recommendation by TFI Envision to keep the name but update the logo and incorporate some taglines that reveal what Lee’s is all about now.
The updated branding has a fresh, clean and easy-to-read look with “on 57th” integrated into the logo to promote it’s central location. We also developed two interchangeable taglines - “So much more than an art store!” and “Four floors of Creative Inspiration” to help consumers know what they are.
One of their best ‘silent’ salesman is their shopping bag. TFI Envision created a new 2-sided shopping bag. On one side, their logo in a prominent position along with engaging copy that runs down the side of the bag - “Can you find the item we don’t carry?”, followed by a list of items. This encourages people to read the whole list just to find that one item that doesn’t fit (who can resist!). Simple, yet an effective way to get people to know about all the items Lee’s does carry. On the other side, just their logo with the other tagline.
TFI Envision will be continuing this concept in an advertising campaign to be released later this year, as well as developing new signage.
If you find yourself in NYC, stop by Lee’s for a real shopping experience! 220 West 57th Street

Greenwich, CT — Ok, we probably got your attention with that headline! Well, the folks at River West Enterprises chose TFI Envision, Inc. to develop the branding, marketing and sales materials, packaging and website for their new product line of personal medi-gowns called BumBlockers™.
The product line is designed to ease some of the stress of medical visits and hospital stays. So the logo had to reinforce the brand strategy by having the same light-hearted look and feel as the name evoked.
Bum Blockers’ gowns and matching tote bags come in a variety of colorful, stylish prints designed to be worn front to back or back to front. They are generously cut for added coverage, with an extra Velcro closure so no one sees your bum. Perfect for your next doctor visit or hospital stay.

Going Green brings in nearly $600,000!

Norwalk, CT — The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk inspires people of all ages to appreciate Long Island Sound and protect it for future generations. This years’ Annual Red Apple Awards Dinner theme “The Red Apple Awards go Green” was chosen because of the Maritime Aquarium’s continuing efforts to bring environmental education to students.
The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk selected TFI Envision, Inc. for the seventh consecutive year, to create the invitation, 60 page event journal and program for this critical event.
To support the ‘environmental’ theme, the interactive invitation and journal took on a ‘green’ look, including the Red Apple Fund logo developed by TFI Envision, Inc. in 2007.
This year’s event was a tremendous success, and exceeded their fundraising goal by almost $150,000, generating nearly $600,000 in revenue! Proceeds from the Red Apple Awards Dinner support the Red Apple Fund for Student Enrichment, the Aquarium’s educational outreach and scholarship program for students.
Since 1988, the Red Apple Fund has brought science to life for more than one million students of all ages and backgrounds from across the region.
TFI Envision, Inc. was has been a strategic partner with the Maritime Aquarium since 1995, developing their brand identity initially, and continuing to build their brand presence through their annual report and event materials which foster greater awareness and recognition (which in turn, helps them raise the much needed funds to keep this important institution ‘afloat’).

Five Special Events!

Beverly, MA — Have you ever received an invitation for an event that is so unique or interesting, that you keep the invitation long after the event? Well, Rockport Publishers, a leading publisher of books for design professionals, decided that a book showcasing such items would be a winner. They invited designers from all over the world to submit invitations, logos and graphics for special events. The result: “Design for Special Events”, a hard cover, full color, 300+ page annual featuring the best in special event design and branding.
TFI Envision, Inc. is pleased to be among the chosen few with 5 pieces, including:
- Debonair Fish Affair logo for exciting evening event of dress up, entertainment and fun, for children and their families. The proceeds of the event benefitted the Children’s Opportunity Fund and The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk‘s education programs.
- Jubilee event logo and poster to benefit the Norwalk Emergency Shelter. The design incorporated bright, joyful colors, dancing stars with musical notes in the ‘sky’ above them, and a playful use of color panels incorporated into the headline type to give the viewer the sense that this will be a fun, lively, and entertaining event featuring song, music and dance.
- A Masked Ball Logo, designed for a benefit event for the Connecticut Grand Opera & Orchestra.
- A Holiday Party invitation that comes in a small brown box. Inside is a little diorama of a snow scene. At the base of scene are the words to the invitation itself. (Many of these invitations still sitting open and displayed on invitees desks - one of those invitations you just don’t want to throw out!)
- Another Holiday Party invitation - this little gem came wrapped in tissue paper and a satin bow. Inside was a 4 panel, grommeted booklet that when fanned out, created a snowflake. (This interactive invite still remains on many invitees desks - just too fun to toss!)
TFI Envision, Inc. has a long history of creating memorable invitations to special events. These design jewels have garnered numerous awards over the years. Many of them became part of people’s permanent collection of keepsakes.

April in Paris!

Paris, France — Mary Ellen Butkus, VP, TFI Envision, Inc. recently participated in the powerful three-day conference - “Design + the linking force“ - in Paris, France. Presented by the Design Management Institute, this international organization seeks to heighten the awareness of the role of design as an essential part of business strategy.

The conference focused on the concept that as more corporate decision makers become convinced that the value of design in business is a process - a way of thinking, the more critical the role of design management becomes to business success.

Presentations were made by design managers from around the globe, and attended by over 170 professionals representing 26 countries, including India, Australia, Brazil, Singapore, China and Finland.

Today's business environment requires more attention and understanding of the consumer (and the consumers' experience), which is a direct function of not one person or department, but the whole company!

Fully committed companies that embrace design thinking? Apple, Virgin, JetBlue, Starbucks, and TFI Envision, Inc. to name a few! To read more, visit www.dmi.org

Value-Added Team Effort for Golf Event

Yorktown Heights, NY — Guiding Eyes for the Blind selected TFI Envision, Inc. to develop the invitation and overall graphic theme for their upcoming Golf event. When Lisa Deutsch, VP for Marketing and Development at GEB, was asked for some comments about this partnership, her response was as follows:

“For the first time, the unique nature of our Golf Classic was presented in a clear and compelling manner. It has been difficult for prior creative teams to communicate our many “unique selling points” - Guiding Eyes dogs on the golf courses; US Blind Golfers Association participation; a two-course event; and Super Bowl quarterback Eli Manning - in one, tight, piece.

TFI Envision told our story in an elegant, clean, and persuasive piece. Our “Save the Date” card set the stage for very early interest, and the invitation made it easy to “close the deal.” Before the end of March, we have sold out two golf courses - 288 players. We haven’t had this level of participation in over 10 years - right now we are contemplating using a third golf course.

TFI Envision always set the highest bar for our graphic design projects. The team’s value-added factor is powerful: they consistently demonstrate a genuine and professional investment in understanding our programs and business goals.

Now that we work TFI Envision, it’s hard to settle for anything less.”

Thank you Lisa!

Keeping it “Real” In the Field (notes from the field)

Norwalk, CT — Veto Pro Pac, maker of fine tool carrying systems, selected TFI Envision, Inc. to create a series of ads for their product line.

The Veto Pro Pac tool bags are used by professionals on the job everyday. We worked with Veto Pro Pac to determine how to best advertise their product line. Since the tool bags are geared toward working professionals, it became clear that they are the best ‘salesmen’ for the product line.

Enter, the Veto ProFiles ad series—each ad to focus on a particular professional, shown on the job and describing in their own words what they love about their Veto Pro Pac tool bag. In addition, each ad showcases actual photos of their tool bag configuration. These ads will be running in national Fine Home Building and Fine Woodworking trade publications.

She’s a Honey

Norwalk, CT — TFI Envision, Inc. is pleased to announce a new member of our team - Honey Lee. She is young and somewhat inexperienced, but she has plenty of enthusiasm and is fitting in just fine.

Honey Lee is working as an apprentice with Dizz Lee, our senior PT*. Together they provide a comprehensive PT* program required in a creative environment. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, having a pet in the office results in more productivity and decreased absenteeism.

Dizz Lee and Honey Lee, along with their ‘mom’ Elizabeth Ball, President | Creative Director of TFI Envision, Inc., are also volunteers on Sundays with the Healing Hounds Program at Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Connecticut. They visit with patients and staff, bringing smiles to everyone.

Visiting with dogs can help people feel less lonely and depressed, as well as providing a welcome change from routine. People become more active and responsive both during and after visiting with animals. A dog visit can offer entertainment, or a welcome distraction from pain and infirmity. Stroking a dog can reduce a person's blood pressure. Petting encourages use of hands and arms, stretching and turning. The benefits continue even after the visit. The visit leaves behind memories not only of the visit, but of past experiences. It offers something for people to share.

If you have a dog and are interested in learning more about the Healing Hounds Program, contact Elizabeth Ball at liz@tfienvision.com

The Moment of Truth

New York, NY — “Marketers and retailers are challenged as never before to convey their message and promote their brand. Package design, instore graphics and point-of-sale are increasingly the difference maker as to the when, where and how of the consumer’s purchasing decision.”

The American Package Design Awards, sponsored by Graphic Design USA was created to recognize these segments of the design industry. “This annual competition celebrates the traditional skills and newfound power of package design and instore graphics to advance the brand promise and connect emotionally with the buyer at the moment of truth.”

Four pieces designed by TFI Envision, Inc. were selected from over 1,000 entries to receive awards this year, including:
- A series of mini counter top gravity feed displays for Vaseline Cocoa Butter and Intensive Rescue Body Butter, designed for Unilever Home & Personal Care USA (shown at left). These displays each show the swirl of rich creamy body butter inside the package which differentiates it from lotions.

- Bendix® CQ™ Ceramic Brake Pads Packaging, designed
for Honeywell Consumer Products Group - A series of promotional packages for Vaseline Total Moisture and Intensive Rescue Lotion, designed for Unilever Home & Personal Care USA (shown bottom right). Thank you Country Crock

Englewood Cliffs, NJ — Shedd’s Spread Country Crock®, a Unilever Foods product line, selected TFI Envision, Inc. to develop the promotional packaging for their recent “Spread the Sharing” program.
This program offers consumers the opportunity to go to the www.spreadthesharing.com website, tell a story about something the consumer shared, and with a click of the button, Country Crock donates the cost of a meal to America’s Second Harvest.
Each year, the America's Second Harvest Network provides food assistance to more than 25 million low-income hungry people in the United States, including more than 9 million children and nearly 3 million seniors.
On the initial packaging, TFI Envision, Inc. designed “Spread the Sharing” banners for the front panel and lid, with a side panel dedicated to explaining the program.
The overwhelming success of the program resulted in the follow-up promotional packaging shown above. TFI Envision, Inc. created a dominating “Thank You America” banner for the front of the package and the lid. A large map of the US fills the rest of the packaging with some of the names and cities of people that participated in this wonderful program.
As of our printing date for this press release, 1,041,501 meals have been donated so far from this program. Bravo Country Crock!!
TFI Envision, Inc. was delighted to be a part of this successful program.

Big Rig, Light Duty and Passenger Combined

Perrysburg, OH — FRAM, an innovator in air and oil filtration for 75 years, chose TFI Envision, Inc. to design a ‘portfolio’ to show buyers their full line of filtration offerings at a glance. Their products are for passenger vehicles and light duty trucks sold at retail, as well as commercial vehicles and heavy duty fleet applications. With technological advances largely driven by EPA legislation, FRAM needed a current, hard working sales tool to quickly show the field their up to date technology.
Thru the dynamic use of FRAM’s signature orange, a consistent grid and clean typography, we were able to create an easy-to-read selling tool that highlights each of the product benefits, specifications and a handy cross reference chart. The 16 product sheets are housed neatly in a two pocket folder that also tells the history of FRAM filtration.
